Originally staged as a musical in 1945 and derived from the play Liliom, Carousel was turned into a film in 1956 with Gordon MacRae in the role of Billy and Shirley Jones as Julie. The film followed the stage adapation almost to the letter, with only four changes being made to the storyline. Whilst the film was released to critical acclaim, box office receipts were disappointing, although the success of the soundtrack continued to generate interest in the flim, subsequently makintg it a success thanks to television and video sales.
Composers Rodgers and Hammerstein claimed Carousel to be their favourite work together and the show has proved to be extremely popular over the last five decades. It is, of course, the enduring popularity of You'll Never Walk Alone, which became a pop hit for Gerry & The Pacemakers and was subsequently adapted as a football anthem, taking on a life of its own outside the confines of the soundtrack. |
