Ethel Merman’s performance in the lead role on Broadway was considered so unbeatable she was invited to reprise the role in the Hollywood film version, something of a rare treat. Miss Merman’s film performance was equally superb, leading many to wonder why she was not invited to repeat other stage and theatre roles in the film versions.
