Although Gentlemen Prefer Blondes may be best known for giving Marilyn Monroe one of her most memorable screen moments with 'Diamonds Are Girl’s Best Friend', the show had a long and varied history long before the 1953 film version.
Originally written in the 1920s by Anita Loos, the very first film version appeared in 1928 (and earned Anita $115,000 for her screenplay) before Jules Styne and Leo Robin wrote the music and lyrics respectively. The version here is the Broadway stage recording from 1950 featuring Carol Channing, Yvonne Adair and George S Irving under the musical direction of Milton Rosenstock. A number two hit on the American album charts, it was the success of the show and the album that prompted the 1953 film version starring Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell. |
