What do most people know about the Netherlands, that little country on the North Sea coast? Yes, indeed there are many windmills...with lots of cows close by.
And no, contrary to what most people think: not every Dutchman wears clogs. But they are very popular with tourists as a souvenir!
The Dutch also make a lot of cheese. Every year every Dutchman eats about 14.7 kilos of cheese! Perhaps that is the reason the Dutch are sometimes referred to as 'cheese heads'..
The Netherlands (what's in a name) is a low-lying country with much land reclaimed from marsh and sea, called 'polders'. Because it is so flat it's the ideal place for one of the average Dutchman's favourite hobbies: cycling!
Since practically every Dutchman owns a bike, there must be at least 15 million bicycles in the country! The Netherlands is renowned for its tulips. The art of drinking coffee is also big in the Netherlands...
And as soon as there is something worth celebrating, the easy-going Dutch transform into one, big festive group of merrymakers!
But there is more to discover! For instance the typical Dutch cosiness and their passion for skating.
There are buzzing cities and picturesque towns, villages and landscapes.
And many relics of the proud and rich Dutch history, the art and architecture...
One finds an abundance of rivers, lakes, canals and many beaches along the some 250 kilometres long coastline. Fortunately there is also the technical ingenuity of the 'Deltaworks', the dikes and the pumping engines, to protect the Dutch against the abundance of water in and around the country...
... all in all too much to mention...
A visitor can better take the time to discover the Netherlands for him or herself.
